"Queering" subverts traditional LGBTQ+ narratives by examining bi-phobia through a lesbian lens. The series explores the unspoken walls that arise between family members when one comes out, while celebrating the joy and complexity of queer identity across generations.
My creative vision for Queering was to subvert the traditional coming-out narrative. By making the mother the agent of change and the queer daughter the one grappling with acceptance, the series becomes a heartfelt and comedic look at what happens when people close to us break expectations.
The humor is character-driven, found in the friction between Val's earnest enthusiasm for her delayed coming-of-age, and Harper's skeptical gatekeeping.
My primary focus was on fostering naturalistic performances that felt authentic and lived-in. To support this, Queering has a clean and intimate visual language that allow performances to breathe and the witty dialogue to land, grounding the sometimes-absurd situations in emotional truth.
Queering cultivated a passionate international fanbase and has garnered over 8 million views across the series. The project was celebrated for its fresh take on LGBTQ+ narratives, earning a coveted spot as an Official Selection in the Episodic Pilot Competition at the 2019 SXSW Film Festival.
The series resonated with audiences by diving into the messy, funny, and joyful details of queer identity across generations.
