My goal for Queering was to turn the classic coming-out story on its head. By making the mother the agent of change and her queer daughter the one who must learn acceptance, the series offers a heartfelt and comedic look at what happens when the people closest to us defy our expectations.
The humor is character-driven, stemming from the friction between Val's earnest excitement for her delayed coming-of-age and Harper's skeptical gatekeeping of queer culture.I focused on fostering naturalistic performances that felt authentic and lived-in.
To achieve this, Queering was filmed with a clean and intimate visual style. This approach allows the performances to breathe and the witty dialogue to shine, grounding the sometimes-absurd situations in genuine emotional truth.
